Indivisible は「分割できない」「不可分の」という意味で、単に物理的に分けられないだけでなく、本質的に一つであり、分断するとその存在意義が失われる概念を指します。
語源は in-（否定）と dividere（分ける）で、元々は宗教や哲学で「神」や「魂」のように分割不可能なものに使われました。
現代では、政治的スローガン（アメリカ独立宣言の「不可分の国家」）や、数学（割り切れない数）など幅広く応用されますが、根底にあるのは「部分に分解すれば全体が壊れる」という強い統一感です。
使い方としては、「Indivisible rights」（不可分の権利） のように人間の権利や倫理を語る時、あるいは友情や愛情的絆を強調する比喩としても使えます。単なる「分割」の否定以上に、内包された一体性の永久性を喚起します。
